On 10 February 2004, Pope John Paul II approved the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) and named Fr. Vasyl Semeniuk, protosyncellus of the western Ukrainian Ternopil and Zboriv eparchy, as auxiliary bishop of that eparchy and titular bishop of Castra Severiana. The ordination will take place on 3 April 2004.
Bishop Vasyl Semeniuk was born on 2 July 1949 in the village of Dora near Yaremche, western Ukrainian Ivano-Frankivsk region. In his childhood, Yaremche was one of the centers of the UGCC in the underground. It was home to seven priests and ten nuns and also had a monastery which functioned in the underground.
From 1969 to 1974, Vasyl Semeniuk studied in a theological seminary in the underground. In 1997, he received a master’s degree in moral theology from the Catholic University in Lublin, Poland.
On 22 December 1974, he was ordained a priest and a year later appointed rector of the theological seminary in the underground.
In 1989, Fr. Vasyl participated in the legalization process of the UGCC in the western Ukrainian Ternopil region. Since 1990, he has worked as rector of the Josyf Slipyj Higher Theological Seminary in Ternopil. Since 1993, he has also served as protosyncellus of the Ternopil eparchy of the UGCC.
